Virgins Saints and Angels
Thursday 9:00 - 4:30 and $210 Laurie Mika Friday eve 6:00 - 9:00
Student Level: All
Type of Workshop: Project
This is a 9 hour workshop held on Thursday and continued on Friday evening.
In this class we will tackle the human figure in polymer clay whether she be a virgin, a saint or an angel (or a queen!) Students will learn a variety of polymer clay techniques that include using gold leaf, stamping, painting, collage on clay, embedding and transfers. We will use a layered/fragmented approach where we will work in three areas concentrating on the head, the center torso portion and then the dress-like form on the bottom. The end result is a beautiful medieval/Mexican folk art figure to adorn your wall.
Supplies Instructor will provide for use in class:
- clay blades
- wax paper
- paint and supplies
- mica powder
- Guilder’s paste
- collage images
- seed beads
- rags
- toaster ovens
- Staz-On inkpads
- Distress ink pads
Students should bring:
- A small substrate either 7x9 or 6x8 inch wood plaque or the deep Cradled Birch Painting Panels from Dick Blick online
- 8 packages of either Premo or Sculpey III polymer clay-have 3 be the same color, I prefer the darker colors. Make sure the clay is somewhat soft by pressing your thumb into it, if it feels rock hard, don’t buy it! Please pre-condition clay prior to class by kneading it until soft and then roll into a ball and store in a baggie.
- 1 small package of white/ecru clay (for transfers)
- 1 8x10 piece of chipboard to make dress template (even a piece of a cereal box is fine!)
- rolling pin or even large PVC pipe works
- a small bottle of Weldbond glue (Michaels or Ace Hardware)
- a small paintbrush and a one inch paintbrush
- a pencil with an eraser
- gold or silver leaf- I prefer the ArtMinds Ready Leaf from Michaels
- A few doo-dads to embed like jewelry parts, charms, buttons, milagros, glass rhinestones, metal findings like halos or crowns, wings, etc. (see pics for ideas).
Optional:
- collage image for your face (I will be bringing some to share).
- Any favorite stamps, especially border stamps.
- Black Staz-on inkpad to stamp edge or substrate
- Fabric trim pieces to embed in dress shape
