Using Plexiglas and/or copper plates, workshop participants will learn to make dry-point etched monotype prints in this all-day (6-hour) intaglio ("en-tal-leo") printmaking workshop. The prints will be produced on actual etching presses. Each participant has the choice of making a minimum of an edition of at least 3 frameable, signed prints (plus an artist's proof) or limited edition (3-4) greeting cards. The prints and cards will be produced on etching presses from "original" works of art. Skills learned include: print shop setup and safety, plate preparation, water and oil based ink procedures and handling, dry-point etching (line and shading) techniques, image composition, plate wiping, etching press handling and proper ways to "pull a print" and other technical and artistic skills.

This workshop is designed for the serious artist/crafter wishing to expand her or his artistic skills beyond rubber stamps and those who don't want to settle for the ordinary. Drawing skills are helpful, but not necessary, as the workshop will also cover how to take existing images and make them into your own, personal statements. Several etching presses will be set up and to maximize their use by workshop participants, attendance will be limited to 16 persons.

The instructor will provide complete written instructions (for later reference), sample images, etching presses, printing paper, soaking tubs, Plexiglas and copper plates, ink, tarlatan wipes and other necessary "studio" supplies.

Supply List: An etching scribe and burnisher. e.g. Dick Blick Twisted Etching Needle # 45212-0000 and Dick Blick Intaglio Burnisher # 45100-1002 or other similar items. NOTE: T he instructor will have some scribes and burnishers available for class use, but you are highly encouraged to bring your own. Apron, Latex or rubber gloves, 2-3 tea towel sized rags or pre-washed baby diapers, Pencil, Metal ruler. Black and white Xeroxed image/print ideas or compositions - line art is best. Image size no larger than 5" x7" if you want to make greeting cards, no larger than 8" x 10" if you wish to make editioned prints. I will have plenty of images on hand in the event you can't find a suitable image.
