Contemporary Mosaic Techniques $130

This class will be taught over two evenings to allow drying time. $130 plus materials fee of $15 covers both evenings.

In this process driven class we will explore, and learn a variety of distinctive, contemporary mosaic techniques to enhance your work, broaden your skills and enliven your mosaic know how. Discover rich mosaic techniques that easily produce unassumingly beautiful results that require only your imagination and the materials at hand (and a few simple directions!) Create viewing portals by learning to mosaic over drawings, photos and transfers with glass. Save money by learning to make faux gold tesserae. Work with found objects and give back life to old broken discards and flea market finds. Use acrylic paint for both a pattern to be followed (covered) and as a decorative surface allowed to show through when mosaicking with clear glass.

You won’t believe all the things you can do. Plus one of the great things about mosaics is that mistakes are welcome and simply lead to more beauty as it is a most forgiving art form. Though be forewarned if you don’t already know, this process is addictive and can easily compel you to do things you may not expect...may find yourself breaking china and cutting the heads off small glass figurines with a devilish smile on your face! Warning: Prep behavior can confuse neighbors, husbands and small dogs.

A veritable smorgasbord of mosaic materials awaits you, taught by one of the country’s foremost mosaic authorities Jill MacKay, author of two mosaic books: Creative Garden Mosaics and The Pattern Companion: Mosaics.

Materials fee of $15.00 payable to instructor at class time that will cover the cost of stained glass, clear glass, Italian glass tile, metallic ceramic tile, micro ceramic tile, glass shapes, glass drops, agates and natural stones, acrylic paints, boards, paint brushes, silicone glue, gloves and assorted ornamental do-dads from my private stash. Though each student will not be receiving a kit per se, materials will be laid out like a mosaic smorgasbord and you’ll be allowed to pick and choose like a kid in a candy shop!

Workshop participants must bring to class:
imagination (numero uno)
mosaic glass cutters (the kind with round wheels as the jaw)
tile nippers (don’t try to carry these items onboard an aircraft!!)
pencil
paper
scissors
