Barbara Roth has been drawing since age 4 when she fell in love with her first set of crayons. From there, she went on to study fine art at U.C.L.A. where she received her degree in art. She also acquired a teaching credential with a specialization in art education. She took additional professional art classes at Art Student’s League in NY, Art Center in Pasadena, and Otis Parsons in L.A.
For many years Barbara taught school and wrote and illustrated children’s books. She retired when her daughter was born and was surprised to find her child did not sit quietly next to her drawing table while she painted. When her daughter entered kindergarten, Barbara began teaching art classes to children and adults in the Sacramento area. She believes everyone can learn to draw and paint if they want to, and enjoys helping people develop their creative lives.
Barbara and her family traveled to Europe in 2002 and she found she loved painting during and after her travels. She returned to Europe last year and taught a class in Tuscany which concentrated on sketching in pen and ink with watercolor. She learned from that trip how to take the best photos to paint from, what materials to bring and what techniques work best when painting out of doors. She also learned much about red wine and gelato.
Currently Barbara’s personal artwork combines images from her travels, imagination and home life. She spends her time teaching for Sierra College, Placer Adult School, Michaels Art Supplies and Toscana Americana in Italy as well as painting, cooking, doing yoga and tending to the needs of her 2 beagles and her husband and daughter.
