This class will teach you to transform a piece of sheet copper into a beautiful metal pod. You will learn to cut, anneal and forge a piece of metal into a pod shape using the fold form technique. You will learn the process of torch-fired immersion enameling (all sides will be enameled) as you create the pod, headpins, and copper tube beads. You will experiment with different enamel products to create headpins and tube beads that have the look of lamp work. You will complete your design by making either a link chain or a choker collar.
Materials/Kit Fee of $35 payable to Instructor at class time includes:
- copper for pod
- copper tube beads
- copper wire
- mandrels
- dust mask
- written instructions
- consumables: enamel powders and frit, Map gas
Supplies Provided by Instructor: The following tools to be shared at designated work stations although you are welcome to bring any of these tools if you prefer not to share.
- large torches
- micro torches
- pliers
- bead-pulling cans
- Vermiculite
- pipe cutters
- flat files
- quenching jars
Students must bring:
- steel block & rubber block (to muffle sound)
- chain-nosed pliers
- cross-peen hammer (this hammer is critical to this project – Google it and make sure you have the correct type)
- metal punch - 1.8mm
- wire cutters
- safety glasses
- 18- or 20-gauge wire and small beads (if creating a link chain)
- 14- or 16-gauge wire & spacer beads (if creating choker)
