Fold Forming Fun - the Basics Tuesday 9:00 - 4:30 $145
  April Bower August 6

Student Level:
All - Beginners welcome
Type of Workshop: Process

Fold Forming is a procedure developed by Charles Lewton-Brain that exploits the natural elastic & plastic qualities of metal to create unique three-dimensional forms using simple hand tools.

It is a fun discovery process to find what works for you and which things you like. Lots of hammering & annealing & kinda dirty. A very beginning student can have good results.

You will be learning basic line folds, 2 different forged line folds, a T-fold & variations AND for the adventurous, time permitting, a star fold. It is possible to have some finished items at end of session, but the goal is to learn the process so you can continue practicising and experimenting on your own.

Kit fee of $25 payable to Instructor at class time includes:

  • 5 different shapes & sizes of 22 g copper already cut out & annealed
  • Use of propane torches & gas for annealing, mandrels & hand tools

Student should bring if possible*:

  • eye protection: eyeglasses or safety glasses
  • cross pein hammer (contact me for specifications & suppliers - I have some)
  • steel bench block or mid size anvil
  • leather or wood mallet
  • metal cutting shears (tin snips, solder shears, aviation snips kind of thing)
  • small dull knife or old butter knife, letter opener or a dull old screwdriver ( flat) for prying open folds
  • flat nose pliers
  • an apron ( this is dirty work)
  • a rag - old t shirts are great for this, but any drying/wiping rag will do
  • a sharpie pen
  • copper sheet - 24 g or close
  • thin brass sheet and sterling or fine silver sheet in 24-28g  if you want to try it
  •  I would suggest closed toe shoes and clothes that you won't mind getting dirty

*Bring what you have. If you had to come empty handed, you could still do it, but when you want to continue on your own, it’s good to know whether your tools will work or not.

I will have 4 vises & 5 anvils, assorted hammers & mallets for use.

I will have extra copper sheet available for purchase.
