Swirls and Twirls: Calligraphic Flourishing on Fabric and Paper
$135
Lisa Engelbrecht

Student Level: All levels

The new hot adornment on everything from soup to skateboards is the flourish. We’ll take lettering and art tools and learn to pirouette on paper and fabric. Various media will be introduced and the artist will be introduced to new tools like the Parallel Pen, dimensional paints and Wite Out pens. The modern scribble is neat behind your collages and journal pages. Doodling sinuous thick and thin lines and other exercises will be our experiments. We’ll follow the linear route of calligraphy-with out having to learn calligraphy.

The artist will review the traditional flourishes of early 19th century handwriting for inspiration and try the original vintage pointed pen adding their own marks. Simple wash techniques will provide a background for flourishes, creative flowers and swirls making personal intuitive marks. This is also a great way to release stress while making fabulous art. The artist will come away from the class with many paper and fabric backgrounds flourished and ready to be collaged or to be used as journal or book covers
