Let’s Face it; be Fearless!

Student Level : All levels

This is a process-oriented class. We will start the day by doing exercises with paint, pens, and paper to stimulate the right side of our brains and put our pesky critics that reside in the left-brain, to sleep. This will include quickly creating simple faces on recycled paper with our non-dominant and dominant hands using a variety of media. We are not concerned about ‘drawing’ or fashioning faces in their true likeness, but allowing our hand to talk with the paper in an intuitive manner, the result being completely unplanned and unknown. This class isn’t about painting pretty faces or realistic faces; it’s all about loosening up, letting go, and allowing your muse to play – what is the face that SHE wants to create! Out of the many faces we will paint and draw, some of them you will toss in the garbage, some you will save for later, and a few you will chose to paint to completion in class. I will demonstrate how I paint simple backgrounds for my faces on phone book pages, using ink or paint and glazes, when to paint over some of your lines, and when to add more. By the end of the class, most people will have at least one completed piece, some will have more, it all depends on how fast or slow you tend to work. If you’re enrolled in my Endearing and Whimsical Folk Art Dolls class, and have a way to transfer and reduce your painted face to muslin in the required size for the doll before class, you can use it for your doll project.

$5 Kit fee payable to instructor at beginning of class time includes : A variety of papers to paint on including atlas pages, old letters, phone book pages, wallpaper, etc; Bits of paper and collage images to incorporate into the faces or backgrounds; Bits of lace and vintage ephemera; A Uni-ball Signo white pen and a handout.
