Extreme Journalism 101: Into the Shadowy Mist
$75
Juliana Coles

Student Level: All levels - no prior art or writing experience necessary

This is my famous push/pull exercise that allows us to enter the shadowy mist of the pages of our Visual Journal.  This is where we create seemingly unrelated  layers  in our journal pages through mixed media explorations and then push everything back or soften to develop a cohesive background.  We then wipe away at this shadowy mist or dream world in order to discover and pull forward symbols from the unconscious to give them voice.  This is a very subtle exercise and so I am offering it as its’ own workshop with two complete push/pull assignments to really help you “get” this amazing technique.  So whether you have done this exercise ten times before or have never tried it, introduce yourself to Expressive Visual Journaling through my push/pull method and enter the shadowy mist of the visual journaling experience.   The Visual Journal, like our dreams, holds clues and it is up to us to decipher them.  This is my signature exercise which I have been teaching for ten years and is the very foundation for my Expressive Visual Journaling process which combines journal writing with art making in the safe container of a book.

Supply List:

Your Visual Journal ( or 2 or 3)
Your favorite supplies or your traveling mixed media tool kit.
Glue - I love big UHU glue sticks
Scissors
Brushes for your paints
A rag or two
A jar for water
All Visual Journalists should have a set of rubber stamp letters and numbers.
I highly recommend Staz On stamp pads because we work so quickly.
Acrylic paint- any brand, any color in at least two colors, one light one & one dark.
At least two brush markers in different colors- black would be good.
A graphite pencil- regular old number two is fine, but if you can get to an art store get an ebony pencil, or a 6B, or a graphite stick (not charcoal)- just make sure that you have some wet items and some dry items.

Collage:

A text book or poetry book to cut
At least one magazine
You will also need some collage items in various textures that appeal to you (bring copies of things that are precious to you.)
