Art As Offering, Making an Art Ritual
$145
Sas Colby
Student Level: All Levels
This project combines two powerful concepts – that of giving and that of keeping a secret. We will use mostly recycled materials to make an art bundle intended as a gift. Come prepared with a recipient in mind and bring materials that relate to that person. Perhaps you have some secret or symbolic objects you want to hide inside your bundle. The dictionary defines a bundle as “a number of things tied, wrapped, or held together.” Techniques explored include collage, wrapping, tying, painting and constructing. Examples of talismans and fetishes will be shown. There is magic and power in making art to give away. It increases energy in the universe. It expands both the maker and the receiver, and it is often the catalyst for greater creativity.
A Materials Fee of $3.00 is payable to instructor at class time and includes Instructor’s handout, gesso, string, some miscellaneous supplies, fabric, newspapers, etc.
Instructors note: In this class I show some examples of talismans and fetish pieces and talk about some of the cultural history of giving (ideas from "The Gift" by Lewis Hyde, a book that many art historians cite). The projects take on different aspects as each participant has a recipient in mind. I love to teach this class because there is so much MOJO, heart and natural expressiveness in it. Some will choose to make pouches, others will make wrapped bundles and yet others will make ritual enclosures. I have found that I am more facilitator than teacher in this workshop because everyone just naturally wants to make something for someone. At the end each person presents their piece. Pass the kleenex!!
Supply List: The most important thing is to have in mind is a recipient for your bundle offering––bring found objects and memorabilia that relate to that person. Found materials such as old papers, cardboard, tissue, etc. Cloth, ribbon, string, wire or cord to tie your bundle Needle and thread if you want to sew on it Collage materials Found Objects: Personal items you may want to either affix to the bundle or bury inside Scissors, utility knife Adhesive you like: could be Elmer’s or Sobo or PVA or glue stick Paint & brushes, or markers (whatever you like to use for color –could be pastels) Any small tools you like to use: awl, pliers, staple gun, heat gun, etc.
