In the workshop we are going to work with images and text to develop the content in book format.
We will start our class with a show of images from international contemporary book exhibitions, we will also look at actual books.
Through a short writing exercise and discussion, we will develop ideas to start our books.
Please bring a sample of your previous work in any medium , and a variety of significant materials: these could be photographs, drawings, paintings, small flat objects, letters, fragments of prose, journals or poems. We will look at ways to select and to combine them into a meaningful whole. A variety of techniques may be used: painting, drawing, collage, cutting, folding, tearing the pages, stitching -- anything you already know or want to try.
I will present four simple book structures: the scroll, the accordion fold, the single signature pamphlet and the oriental binding.
You will select the materials, binding and a structure in relation to your ideas. We will discuss the work in progress individually and then at the end we will look at a finished piece as a group.
Supply List : a good quality paper, paint, ink, fabric, glue, needle and thread, pen, pencil, eraser, brushes, X-acto knife, scissors
Optional: bone folder, rubber stamps, stencils if you have them
