Over the years I have had the privilege of witnessing many individuals learn to draw for the first time as their eyes opened to a new way of seeing the world around them. After these classes, I have found myself wanting to take my students beyond the contours of their newly found sight, and into seeing values and three-dimensional form. Creating convincing values and textures has always been my favorite aspect of the drawing process. Lets spend the day together as I share with you all the "shading" skills I have learned over the years, through both the academic and the intuitive expressive techniques. This class is for those who have never been introduced to these skills and techniques, as well as those who wish to further their own drawing skills.

In this class we will explore in-depth a variety of techniques for applying value to our drawings, thus increasing the illusion of three-dimensional form. We will warm up with learning how to add hatching and cross-hatching to our ink contour drawings. Then I will share with you my techniques for creating values with a more controlled use of graphite and continuous tone. Lastly we will loosen up, experiment and have fun using my current favorite tools to create expressive lines and values with water-soluble mediums.

Instructor Provided (for use in-class, and to share):

• Value Finder
• Cups for water
• Paper towels
• Flow medium and Gloss/Varnish mediums

Student should bring:

• A personal visual journal book or sketchbook with quality paper
• Faber-Castell PITT artist pen - either Small, Fine or Medium or Waterproof India ink pen (Pigma Micron pens)
• Light gray marker (warm or cool tone no darker than a #3)
• Assortment of drawing pencils - 2H, 2B, 6B, 8B
• Blending Stump (looks like a light gray pencil made out of paper, found near the drawing pencils at most art stores)
• Kneaded Eraser (looks like a gray piece of clay, found near the drawing pencils and erasers at most art stores)
• Any other erasers you might like to bring (optional)
• Small pencil sharpener
• Water soluble graphite pencil (Sketch & Wash is one I use)

• Pentel Water-Based Color Brush (Black or color of your choice) link to purchase (click here)
• Elegant Writer speedball calligraphy pen
• Assortment of Small paintbrushs
• A few small personal objects to draw brought from home
• Various Color photos (a color print out from your computer is fine) - high quality images with lots of crisp fine details is preferred
• Black and White copies of the images above
• A close up photo of yourself blown up to fit onto an 8.5"x11" printer paper
