Prerequisite: Basic experience with encaustic helpful but not mandatory

Using sumi and other porous printmaking papers, and mindful of historical, compositional and color considerations, we will print with encaustic paints off a heated surface. Melted encaustic medium will also be used when students want to render the paper transparent. To contrast with the more fluid look that hand-painting the heated surface provides, we will explore using "post-print" drawing into the paper, as well as making and using stencils for the printmaking process. Mounting ideas will be discussed and demonstrated.

• natural bristle brushes
• all printmaking papers and newsprint
• Duralar

Instructor Provided (for use in-class, and to share):

• Teacher will provide all equipment and most tools (see supply list below).
• Additionally, the teacher will provide students with a valuable self-generated 6-page Encaustic Resources Guide.

Student should bring:

• apron or smock
• notepaper and pen
• pair of scissors
• exacto knife with sharp blade(s)
• inexpensive Japanese barren (bamboo covered)
• puffy car polishing pad
• one or more carbon-based drawing implements
• spray bottle
• Please wear closed shoes.
