"Flying Colors", Exploring Personal Iconography

In this workshop, we will spend a day creating large colorful mixed-media banners. Why banners? Because they are bold, vibrant and expressive. Throughout history, artists and designers have been called upon to create symbolic ceremonial banners, flags, pennants, gonfalons, prayer flags and coats of arms. In order to create an expressive banner, we need to dig deep and define ourselves, finding our own unique creative iconography. Throughout the day, we will do various explorations and exercises, in order to uncover and express our own meaningful symbols. Although the emphasis of this class is Process and not project-making, we will create amazing and vibrant banners, and you will leave the class with colors flying.

I will supply the large paper to work on, you bring -

Supply List: 8 oz jar of white gesso, Your favorite mark marking tools (pens, pencils, markers) will come in handy. Please include a soft pencil and a china marker or grease pencil. Bring a selection of inexpensive acrylic paints, in a range of colors. Be sure to include white, black and one metallic, in the mix. In addition, you may also want to bring a selection of water-soluble pastels and/or conte crayons. Bring 4-6 inexpensive brushes, different sizes. Bring an 8 oz jar of matte acrylic medium, for adhering collage elements. A pack of index cards. X-acto knife or scissors

Here's the fun part: Start envisioning your personal banner, and start collecting fun mixed-media "adornments" to add to the surface. Fascinating collage elements in varying sizes, non-raveling fabrics like felt, metallic touches like bells or rusted bottle caps, large sequins or paillettes, buttons, braid, twine, string, lightweight objects that can be glued or sewn to a surface.

Bring a series of xerox prints of images that are meaningful to you. Think BIG! You may also want to generate several prints in various sizes of the same image. Don't go overboard -- a group of 10 - 12 prints will be enough.

The most important thing you can bring to my class is Willingness. Be willing to be a part of a circle of artists who will share this celebration of Self, and allow for experimentation and spontaneity.
