Cool Letters with Cool Tools

Using a big variety of types of letters - some calligraphic, some weird fonts - we will explore and experiment with letters using all types of tools and media. Letters like these will jump start creative and unique journal pages and open up tons of possibilities for writing. The artist will be encouraged to create a unique and personal writing style. Some of the tools used will include callig- raphy pens, flat brushes, stencil brushes, gel pens, rainbow and colored pencils. We will explore inks, watercolors and metallic powders, gold foils and glue pens. Even wite-out pens and bleach will be turned into a unique mark making tool! The artist will bind these explorations into a simple sample book and many handouts will be provided for future experimentation!

There will be a $5 supply fee payable to the instructor at class time for pen nibs, walnut ink, metallic powders, gold foils, various inks and other media.

Supply List :

One pen Nib-Speedball C0 or C1 – these are usually sold in packs of two – you won't need the entire Speedball C set.

One Pen Holder made especially for the Speedball C0 nob – NOT for crowquill

Bottle of Ink – Your choice of color – Higgins/Calli/Sumi

Pearlescent is nice and shiny (you can find this in the airbrush section)

Flat brush – 3/8” – ½” – a water media brush, not too expensive

Anything that could be a letter making tool – a branch, a piece of bamboo or ?

Stencil brush – cheap is good

Rainbow Pencils – found at Target

Colored pencils

Gel pens – especially glitter ones

Watercolors in the Tube

Small plastic palette – 6 well

Small water bottle

Sailor Glue Pen – found at scrapbook/rubber stamp stores

Wite-out pen – found at office supply stores

Variety of papers, thick/thin/handmade/colored/dark – whatever you have on hand . We will bind our samples into a simple book so bring a couple of cover pages 23” x 5 ” that are heavier – they could be made of most anything and the weirder the better – we will have lots of fun!

I will bring a lot of the above if you cannot find it!

I have been trained as a professional calligrapher for 20 years – I still take classes! I've found myself attracted to different, i.e., weird letter styles – far from the traditional styles. I have also found that students not formally trained sometimes come up with some of the most unique letters! We will explore this creative lettering side of you and then come up with a whole alphabet that is uniquely yours!
