Glance at the current art scene and you will see that fabric is materializing everywhere (pun intended).
It's not just for sewing anymore. Lesley Riley, the self-appointed Queen of Fabric Collage invites you to spend a day with her exploring the many ways you can use fabric to create original works of art without ever taking a stitch. If you are new to fabric, this is a great place to start. If you have traditional home-ec notions of what to do with fabric, here's a chance to break out of the box.
Besides exploring how to combine paper with fabric, some of the things that will be covered in class are printing on fabric, inkjet and water transfers on fabric; fabric glues and fusing; staining and faux dying, the use of pattern, color and scale; incorporating paper, found objects and mixed media; finding great fabric, creative embellishment and surface design using stamps, stencils and simple stitching; mounting and displaying your work.
Lesley's art can be seen in: Cloth Paper Scissors, fall 2004 issue on page 34, Material Visions Book by Somerset Studio and in Artists Journals & Sketchbooks by Lynne Perella. Her own book, Quilted Memories: Journaling, Scrapbooking & Creating Keepsakes with Fabric is due out in April 2005 from Sterling Publications
