Student Level: All
Type of Workshop: Process and Project

Do you like art dolls that are a bit edgy and stray the norm? Like working in mixed media? Enjoy the creative process? Then this is the class for you!

This workshop will involve the use of multiple products including fabric dyes, paints, shimmery Luminarte products, stencils, oil pastels and more, utilizing simple techniques to result in a one of a kind art doll, whimsically displayed on its own stand. Every one of them will be different, believe it!

You will begin with a pre-sewn fabric doll body, which you will colorfully design in class, exploring how to combine several products to create gorgeous hand-painted fabric. These painting techniques can be applied to all kinds of future fabric projects. There will be a tiny bit of hand-sewing to close the opening after your doll is stuffed.

Your doll really comes alive when you add hair of your choice, and a face you make from polymer clay, choosing from a variety of molds to find the one that best defines the personality of your doll. You will learn a “faux porcelain” technique you’ll be able to use not only for the doll’s face, but for other polymer clay projects as well. A short demo will be done on faces made from molds, and how to tweak and alter the features such as closing eyes that are open. You will also have an opportunity to make simple hands for your doll.

Embellishing is part of the fun in this workshop. You will make a caged heart, which becomes your doll’s focal point, and also play with Tyvek, metal leaf, wire, glitter pens, and fibers, so plan to have fun! Feel free to bring some of your favorite tiny beads or small metal charms if you’d like, for additional embellishment. Your finished doll will be approximately 12” tall. There will be samples in class to inspire you.
