Alternative Presentation $90

Tonia Davenport

This is an exciting opportunity to see how easy (and inexpensive) it is to frame your own artwork, and in doing so, making the framing a true extension of the original art. You’ll be surprised that creating your own “frame” is every bit as fun and creative as making the original art itself.

Students will leave the class with two completed alternative framing projects. One piece will be suited to dimensional artwork (up to 7/8” high) and the other will be best suited for flat artwork, though either project can be curtailed for work that is flat or three-dimensional.

While I will supply molding and acrylic glazing that is pre-cut to save time, I will demonstrate to students how easy it is to cut their own trim molding and acrylic sheets (often referred to as Plexiglas). The basics of measuring and custom design will be discussed as well.

Materials Fee of $10 payable to instructor at class time for wooden board, cut-to-size molding, acrylic sheeting, wood glue, wood screws, finishing nails, hanging hardware, mending plates, masking tape, precut shadow box matting, matboard backing, foam core, wire brushes, crackle medium.

Supply List:
two pieces of artwork, no larger than 5” x 7” *
collage papers (relative to the work you are framing)
acrylic paints, including black (others to coordinate with your pieces to be framed)
decoupage medium (glossy or matte, your preference)
1/8” short eyelets (colors relative to work to be framed)
eyelet-setting tool
decorate brads (colors relative to work to be framed)
craft glue
artists’ tape or scotch tape
sandpaper (any grit is fine)
tack hammer
awl
philips head screw driver
hand drill (Fiskars variety works great)
craft paintbrushes (two or three)
tape measure
acrylic quilter’s ruler (optional)
heat gun (optional)

*It’s helpful to bring artwork to frame with you to this class, but projects can be completed without artwork, which can be added at a later time, when you return home. If you are going to be framing a piece that you plan on creating at Art Unraveled, and you don’t yet know what it will look like, bring paints and collage materials that you love and changes are, they will complement whatever it is that you have yet to make.
