Wire Woven Surfaces for Jewelry

Using copper and other wires, students will learn the two techniques of Looping and Viking knit as a surface embellishment for their jewelry. There will be many options for shape and design. Students will work on several small projects that can be used as necklaces. Copper sheeting will be used for the vessels and copper and colored wire will be used for the weaving surface. Students will have enough to make at least 6 pieces of jewelry. Students are also welcome to bring found or recycled items, rocks, larger crystals or other interesting bits to incorporate into this technique. Mary will have sterling silver sheeting for an extra charge if students wish to purchase and make some of their jewelry in silver.
Materials fee $48 payable to Instructor at class time includes:
- Several pieces of copper sheeting – enough for at least 6 pieces
- Copper wire - 20/18/26 gauges
- Parawire – colored and silver plated wire - 20/18/26 gauges
- Wire for handmade neck chain
- Jump rings and optional findings
- Cold connections – eyelets/rivets/brads
- Misc Beads and Embellishments
- Waxed linen for neck chain
- *Use of Torches, fuel and patinas
- *Use of all misc tools – sharing environment
- Anvil/bench blocks/Metal scissors/hammers/texturing hammers/hole punches/pliers and hand tools and all tools related to preparing the metal for use.
Students should bring:
- Metal scissors or snips
- Personal bench block or Anvil if you can bring one
- A variety of personal tools for wire and metal work
- Any larger 1 inch – 3 inch – crystals, rocks, wood, recycled items, found objects and interesting bits and pieces
Optional extra purchase: Sterling silver – enough for 1 necklace – sheeting at current value at the time
