Using Copper sheeting and brass for accent, students will learn many techniques to make low-tech hinges, for books, doors and lockets. There will be many options for shape and design. Cold connection techniques, patinas, low tech metal applications and alternative surfaces will all be covered. Students will work on several small projects that can be used as necklaces. Students are also welcome to bring found or recycled items, other interesting bits to incorporate into this technique.
Materials fee of $48 payable to Instructor at class time includes:
- Several pieces of copper sheeting – enough for several
- Brass sheeting for accent metal
- Copper wire - 20/18/26 gauges
- Parawire – colored and silver plated wire - 20/18/26 gauges
- Mica for windows
- Decorative papers and images
- Use of Embossing supplies – powders, ink, stamps and gun
- Wire for handmade neck chain
- Jump rings and optional findings
- Cold connections – eyelets/rivets/brads
- Misc Beads and Embellishments
- Waxed linen for neck chain
- *Use of Torches, fuel and patinas
- *Use of all misc tools – sharing environment - Anvil/bench blocks/Metal scissors/hammers/texturing hammers/hole punches/pliers and hand tools and all tools related to preparing the metal for use
Students should bring:
- Metal scissors or snips
- Personal bench block or Anvil if you can bring one
- A variety of personal tools for wire and metal work
- Any larger 1 inch – 3 inch – crystals, rocks, wood, recycled items, found objects and interesting bits and pieces
Optional extra purchase: Sterling silver – enough for 1 necklace – sheeting at current value at the time
