Martina Stein

The daughter of a Naval Architect, I grew up on the shipyards of Hamburg ( Germany), sailing and working on boats year-round. I lived in my dad’s coveralls, rolled up sleeves and pant legs, cinched at the waist with a piece of rope. Steel, wood, fiber glass – hammer, saw, drill, sandpaper, paint and rope were my weekend companions.

In Kindergarten a local fiber artist introduced me to knitting, sewing, crocheting, embroidery, quilting; I worked my way from potholders to sweaters, dresses to now specializing in handbags and accessories, based on my own designs.

For the past two years I have immersed myself in Mixed Media, mashing up materials – metal, fiber and bits of nature – by combining metal and fiber arts techniques.
