Evil Eye Poison Ring
Wednesday $135 Melissa Manley 9:00 am to 4:30 pm Student Level: All welcome
Type of Workshop: Process and Project
“Lucretia opened the ring and deftly dropped the powder into Eduardo’s wine, knowing all the while he’d never give her that evil look again!” Bwahahahaha! What fun! Learn to solder with jeweler’s silver solder as we construct this little whimsy. We’ll use copper wire and tubing to make a simple hinge and clasp on the domed bowl and lid. I will show you how I decorated the lid with a stamped eye. You will learn Doming, soldering, filing with large scale jewelry files and working with tubing, patination and easy finishing techniques. Once you learn this basic design you can go crazy with ways to decorate future ones that you make! And you’ll have such fun trying to decide if it should carry pixie dust, sugar, an ibuprofen or folded up wish!
Kit Fee of $5 payable to Instructor at class time includes: tubing, and pickle and patinas
Instructor will provide the following for use during class: doming block, disc cutter, pickle and pickle pot, metal working tools, torches and soldering tools
Supply/Tool List: (click on items for resource link)
- A flat sterling silver band (be sure it is not plated or made of mystery metal, we'll be soldering on it) OR if you took the Band Groupie workshop, the silver band ring you made.
- 2 - 2"x2” pieces of 20ga copper (roofing copper or flashing is too thin) lots of jewelry suppliers have copper you can get large sheets here and cut them down
- 20ga sterling wire you won’t need more than 4”
- jewelry files
- a sheet of wet/dry sandpaper for metal 220 grit
- masking tape
- benchpin - I like this combo
- jeweler’s saw and blades -#3/0 will work well with the tubing
- 3M sanding pads in 1 each of super, ultra and micro fine. I like to cut these into quarters. I never use the whole sheet at once, they’re so big.
- A hammer -a small ball peen would work, or chasing hammer
- Any stamps you might want to use to decorate. (I’ll bring some of mine, but you might not want to wait/share)
- Close up glasses if you need them
Optional items:
If you’re driving you will want to bring a doming set like this one. It is a heavy item and I’ll be bringing mine, but if you brought yours, you would not have to wait/share.
A disc cutter -just if you already have one and are driving, for the same reasons as above.Questions? Email Melissa at melissamanleymetal@yahoo.com
