In this class you will learn to use a variety of materials and skills to construct a unique and personal choker. Part of the challenge will be the problem solving necessary to incorporate your unique 'found objects' into the final project. You will have your choice of working with copper wire or for more of a challenge use 'Rebar' wire as shown in the example. This choker was featured in the Winter 2010 issues of Belle Armoire Jewelry magazine…now you can make your own.

Supply/Tool List:

  • 14 gauge copper wire OR steel rebar wire (10-12 feet should be plenty)
  • 18 gauge copper wire OR 19 gauge steel annealed wire (10-12 feet should be plenty)
  • 20 gauge copper wire OR 20 gauge steel annealed wire (15-20 feet should be plenty)
  • Bicycle chain – about 8-9 inches
  • Items to suspend from the choker (there are 15 on the example piece but you don't need that many)… just about anything you have on hand (not necessarily bottles as in the example)… buttons, game pieces, old jewelry, fossils, minerals, and industrials materials (chain, electronic parts, etc.)
  • Flat and round nose pliers,
  • Metal shears or tin snips
  • Wire cutters (inexpensive hardware store variety are fine)
  • Files, fine sandpaper, sanding block or Scotch-brite type pad
  • Bench Pin
  • Bench Block
  • A small vise or rivet block (http://www.contenti.com/products/anvils-stakes/100-085.html)
  • Jeweler’s saw and blades (sizes #00 and #1)
  • Small hammer
  • Dremel Tool ( or similar rotary tool) or hand drill
  • Several 1/16 inch drill bits
  • Center Punch
  • Fine point Sharpie marker

Optional:

  • Rubber stamps and ink if you want to add a stamped design to the choker
  • Metal stamps, carving tools, exacto knife, Dremel grinding/cutting wheels
  • Heat gun (like used for stamp embossing)
