Abacus Beads
Saturday $130 Lynne Ann Schwarzenberg 9:00 am to 4:30 pm Student Level: All levels welcome
Type of Workshop: Project and Process
In this class, students will first learn to create faux wood and ivory in polymer clay, and then watch the instructor demonstrate the creation of faux turquoise and malachite. These clay mixes will be used to create a fun and exciting new bead type that I call Abacus Beads. These beads have “captured heishi” type rings that move about on an axis and are kept in place by decorative end caps. If you like to fidget with your jewelry, this class is the one for you: the unique beads you will create are fun to make and fun to wear…with spinning rings of clay. Design and construction of the bead core axis, decorative rings, end caps, learning to follow a series of steps necessary to create parts of clay that stay attached and parts that separate to move freely, as well as proper baking and finishing will be covered in this intensive and innovative workshop.
Kit fee of $15 payable to Instructor at class time includes: Polymer clay (all clay needed will be provided by the instructor), eyelets, super glue, brush and applicator, special adhesive material, index cards, baby wipes, cornstarch, scrap clay, various templates, faux gemstone sheets, small tile to work on, detailed written and graphical instruction packet.
SupplyList (all students must bring):
- Pasta machine (motors are always welcome in my classes)
- stiff clay blade
- large ceramic tile or tempered glass work surface (8” x 10” or larger)
