Several years ago, during a particularly difficult time in my life, I created a series of figurative assemblages and called them "Spirit Protectors" because I immediately felt better while making them. This is the second body of work to come from that series.

This workshop is chock-full of my favorite surface design treatments for metal, clay and wood!

First I will introduce you to two of my favorite processes for altering metal and I will teach you how to create stunning prints and textures on metal through leaf printing and faux etching.

Through the process of cutting these different sheet metal bits and attaching them to a wooden base, you will learn several simple cold connection techniques, no glue needed, and I will teach you my favorite tips & tricks to achieve balance, contrast & a powerful composition, as well as how to efficiently and safely operate the tools.

While creating the fun and funky faces for our figures, you will learn how to make a mold of just about anything, and a simple but very effective way to form and highlight a unique sculptural face and capture amazing emotive expressions.

Finally, we will bring all the components together as two stunning figurative "Spirit Shield" assemblages. My goal is that you will leave with at least one finished piece, approximately 5 x 7 inches, two if you tend to work faster.

I absolutely love making these & I would love to teach you how. There are so many useful techniques in these pieces for you to use in your own artistic journey. I very much hope you can join us! No special skills or experience is needed, just plan to come & have a great time making art!

Kit/Materials Fee (payable to instructor at class time):

  • $35 includes
  • 4 wooden bases prepped with gesso for body and head
  • All hardware: screws, nuts & bolts, nails, wire
  • Paint, glaze, gesso, patinas, glues, hanging hardware & most tools

Student should bring:

  • Paperclay: 4 oz See it here
  • Metal: 3 pieces, 4" x 6" of brass, copper & tin. Metal should be thin enough to cut with tin snips. Metal absolutely must these specific metals or the process will not work, no aluminum please. Thin brass or sheet metal is available at ACE Hardware, K&S brand.
    • 2 Tin- See it here
    • 1 BRASS- See it here
    • 1 COPPER- See it here
    • K&S measures metal by thickness not gauge and it is listed in the product description before the size. A good thickness is .010. The thickness isn't super important, you'll just want metal you can cut fairly easily with scissors or snips.
  • Tin snips: Please bring these, which are best for cutting thin metal See it here
  • Ball-peen hammer
  • 2 or 3 medium-sized Paint brushes
  • Small Phillips head screw driver, (PH#1)
  • Needle nose pliers
  • A pencil
  • A fine tip Sharpie or 2
  • A Ruler
  • A charged cordless drill, charger & 3 tiny drill bits, 1/16". I will be bringing 2 drills but if it is a large class you might have to wait. We will be using the drill often during the workshop so please bring this if at all possible.
  • Disposable gloves, 2 pair

Optional:

  • A Crop-A-Dile or metal punch, if you have one. Please do not buy this if you don't have one, I will have at least 2 with me in class.
  • Gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal
  • A few of your favorite stencils. I will have plenty to share
