"Art is an evolutionary act. The shape of art and its role in society is constantly changing. At no point is art static. There are no rules." - Raymond Salvatore Harmon

One of the most intriguing visuals for me is an old wall layered with peeling paint, faded wall papers, graffiti, posters and text - the kind of wall that really shows you its history through all of those layers of decay. The longer you linger the more hidden imagery you'll find.

In this two-day workshop we'll focus our attention on photo montages collaged together with typography and hand drawn elements to incorporate the textured lives of a generation. Urban collage combines the edge of street art and the textures of graffiti with traditional art mediums to incorporate a vast array of visual art forms.

We'll be transforming the fodder of images from your everyday life into something gritty, tactile and exciting. Bring along your scraps of paper, printed flyers, and graffiti and through a combination of collage, image transfers, tons of textures, mark making and paint, we'll unify all of these elements creating expressive mixed media artworks.

Kit/Materials Fee (payable to instructor at class time):

  • $25 includes:
  • Use of a large variety of different Golden Artist mediums for creating textures
  • Use of specialty mark making tools and supplies
  • Use of stencils
  • Package of imagery
  • Items and mediums for image transfers
  • Unique mark making tools

Student should bring:

  • 2-3 cradled Boards (wood art panel) or canvas - I would recommend 11"X14", 12"X16" or 16"X16" depending on how large you like to work (and how much room you have in your suitcase).
  • Paintbrushes - bring just a few in different sizes (make sure you have at least one larger (about 2" cheap brush from hardware store) and one better quality detail brush) plus a few more.
  • Palette & Water Container
  • Paper towel & baby wipes
  • Golden Matte medium - 12 oz. (when you shake the bottle it should sound like it has the consistency of syrup)
  • Golden Gel Medium (gloss) - small jar
  • Scissors
  • Your usual marking making tools (pencils, markers, etc.)
  • Paper, ephemera and collage items, think about faces, shapes, geometric patterns, textures and symbols and bring your favourites

  • Paint - Golden Acrylics fluid or heavy body (white, black, and any blue, red, and yellow, plus a couple more of your favourites) Some of my paint favorites: Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold, and Quinacridone Crimson, Pthalo Blue, Van Dyke Brown, Green Gold, Pyrrole Red, Pthalo Turquoise

Optional:

  • Stencils (I'll have several, but if you have a favorite you can bring it along)
  • Heat gun
