"One book to bring them all and in the classroom bind them"

Over the years and during my travels I have managed to collect a wild assortment of paper-y stuff. Doodles, postcards, brochures, photos, cabinet cards, sketches and random pieces of art strewn hither and there until the one day I decided to bind them all together and create a one-of-a-kind catch all journal. How did I accomplish this amazing feat of combining assorted sizes, styles and thicknesses of paper you ask? Well, step into my classroom and all will be revealed. I'll show you my not-quite-patented-yet but definitely top-secret binding that I like to call the "Canadian". It all comes down to a very simple technique (I promise anyone can do it) and a secret ingredient. I truly believe this will be your new favorite binding technique!

Grab that box of ephemera you've been collecting, the postcards, and the scraps of cool paper. We'll spend our morning creating some individual journal pages with paint, collage, and text, then we'll spend the afternoon curating our collection of stuff and new journal pages, binding them all the Canadian way.

Kit/Materials Fee (payable to instructor at class time):

  • $40 includes:
  • Package of imagery & ephemera for journaling
  • Specialty papers
  • Matte board for front and back cover
  • Blank Mixed Media Paper for journal pages
  • Eyelets and use of eyelet setting tool
  • Sheet protector
  • Cheese Cloth
  • Waxed Linen Thread
  • Use of all specialty adhesives and mediums necessary
  • Use of all stencils
  • Glue Stick
  • Secret Binding Ingredient

Student should bring:

  • Your box of ephemera... old journal pages, postcards, cabinet carsd, old library cards, menus, paper-y keepsakes of all kind. (Nothing larger than a standard size of letter paper please, my personal preference is to my journal about 6" wide X 11" tall), you can even bring some of your old finished or unfinished paintings or collages on paper or canvas.
  • Three of your favorite paint colors (artist quality paint preferred)
  • Paintbrushes - bring just a few in different sizes and at least one better quality detail brush
  • Scissors
  • Your usual marking making tools (pencils, markers, etc.)

  • Small and light-weight found objects (keys, mica, gears, beads, old lace, fabric trimmings, sequins, etc.) to bedazzle your journal
  • Washi Tape
