One of worlds most (in)famous seafarers is from Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea...the mysterious and captivating Captain Nemo. I recently reread this tale and it got me thinking about the beautiful old books and captain's logs from that era of exploration. Books were works of art as well as useful tools in those days, so, we too will be creating useful and artful tools. These Nemo Journals will be places where you share your discoveries -whatever they may be. Using a variety of found objects we will transform hardback books into found object explorations. To do this we will utilize the sculptural process of assemblage but since we are dealing with books we might as well play with paper too. I love those old maps and manuscripts from days gone by. You will be incorporating techniques to age, color and antique paper, which can be included in the journal or displayed as works of art on their own.

Student should bring:

  • Exacto Knife
  • Hard Back Book Covers (with or without pages inside) - Bring a few, you may want to make more than one.
  • Foam Board or Matte Board - enough to cut 8 or more pieces the same size as the book
  • Paints (Acrylic Golden Paints brand preferably):
  • Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold
  • Titanium White
  • Carbon or Mars Black
  • Pthalo Green blue shade
  • Dioxazine Purple
  • Quinacridone Crimson
  • Pthalo Blue
  • Van Dyke Brown
  • Glues:
  • E6000
  • Molding Paste
  • Matte Medium
  • Books, Magazines, and other paper ephemera,
  • Various small found objects: not a bad idea to bring a small cigar box full of watch parts, decorative elements etc.
  • Brushes - small to medium bristle brushes and a few detail/liner brushes

  • Optional Paints:
  • Micaceous Iron Oxide
  • Interference or Iridescent Paints
