In this workshop we will make a 4 signature book (8" x 11") using fabric and plaster. I demonstrate how to create the plaster fabric wings with wired detail which will wrap around the book. Techniques demonstrating mark making using paint, graphite, charcoal, linseed oil and some oil paints on various substrates. Combining these bits of fabric, paper with our mark making samples can be bundled and stitched into our books. Wire techniques will be included to incorporate into the wings as well as design elements. I will demonstrate how to do several book spreads with such techniques as image transfers.

Kit/Materials Fee (payable to instructor at class time):

  • templates for wings
  • waxed linen and needle
  • wire
  • linseed oil

Student should bring:

  • 12 pieces of fabric - 16" x 11" (You don't have to pre-cut these pages, just have enough fabric to make this book. Look at vintage stores for old tablecloths and napkins-you can find great deals
  • Vintage laces
  • Gesso
  • Matte medium
  • Water container
  • Brushes - assorted bristle and watercolor brushes, I love using the 1/4" angular brush (Princeton Select), as well as assorted filbert brushes, a cheap utility brush for gessoing
  • Pencils
  • Charcoal brushes - 2b-6b
  • Derwent XL charcoal - black
  • Stabilo pencil
  • Brushes - assorted bristle and watercolor brushes, I love using the 1/4" angular brush (Princeton Select), as well as assorted filbert brushes
  • Watercolors - bring a blue, red and yellow of your choice or if you are new to watercolors, you can buy an inexpensive set like Angora Water Colors set
  • Acrylic paint - ultramarine, alizarin crimson, quin. Nichel azo gold and titanium white (I prefer Golden open acrylics)
  • Images for transfers
