Explore acrylic paint techniques with gesso and paint from basic background preparation with white or black gesso, tinted gesso and blended gesso and paint to layering with acrylic washes, stenciling and stamping techniques with gesso and paint.

Techniques taught include:

  • dry brushed gesso
  • tinted gesso
  • blended gesso
  • layering and sanding back
  • sgraffito and mark making
  • dry brushed paint
  • color washes
  • dry glazing
  • painting with matte medium
  • scumbling
  • buffing
  • color scraping/using wedge tools
  • paint transferring
  • rubber stamping with paint/gesso
  • stamping with embossing folders and household items
  • dry and wet stenciling
  • reverse stenciling

Note ** This is a fantastic workshop for beginners, but also very inspirational and freeing for intermediate and advanced students to create a collection of paper swatches with many varieties of techniques involving gesso and paint as well as stencils and stamps for use with future mixed media projects.

Kit/Materials Fee (payable to instructor at class time):

  • $15.00 includes:
  • set of 12 watercolor papers, 4.5 inches x 6 inches
  • use of additional acrylic paints
  • black gesso
  • interference paint
  • matte medium
  • use of stamps/stencils
  • mark-making tools
  • sandpaper, etc.
  • pre-printed labels for each technique

Student should bring:

  • 8 oz white acrylic gesso (Golden is instructor's favorite)
  • 2-3 colors of acrylic paint (heavy body or fluid instructor recommend Golden)
  • 1 inch flat or mop brush for acrylic media
  • water container, paper towels
  • baby wipes

Optional:

  • your own favorite simple rubber stamp patterns and/or stencils, or other "tools" like sponges, plastic forks, knives, combs, wedges, etc.
