Many high fashion designers are already repurposing garments, now it's our turn to follow suit. I've been upcycling garments for several years now and find it fun and satisfying BUT it also contributes to the fact we as a society need to recycle, even garments. In this class we will go through the process of recreating a garment from purchase to finish. The garment will be made from shirts so the finished one will be a top/tunic/dress. If a man wants to join in and upcycle a jacket/vest/shirt that can be done too. I will give you design tips and ideas; make ruffles from other shirts for a hemline, sew yoyo's to attach as adornments, cut button panels to sew on other shirts for trim, these are just a few ideas to incorporate. This is not a tailoring class so think of a garment being more artful and that raw edges and flaws might be part of the intended design. Basic sewing skills are all that is required. I am limiting the class to 12 so I can spend time with each individual to create your own style garment, from lacy and feminine to grungy and edgy.

Day One: We will spend some time looking at sample garments, discussing what type of shirts and items to look for at thrift stores then we will go shopping!! We will visit one or more thrift stores and SAS fabrics in a chauffer driven shuttle van. We plan to be gone for about 2-3(+?) hours. I will help you at the thrift store with ideas of what to purchase and what might work or not work for your garment. SAS fabrics is a warehouse of fabrics, trims, everything to buy to embellish our garments. When we get back from shopping some items may need to be laundered so yes we will do that too, it's part of the process.

I will have snacks and water in the van but be prepared to eat a late lunch or bring food with you.

Day Two: We will spend all day designing and sewing our garments using what we purchased or brought to use. There will also be items to purchase in class such as vintage doilies, lace, hankies, trims, buttons, etc.

Kit/Materials Fee (payable to instructor at class time):

  • No kit fee but you will need money for shopping. Think an average of $5.00 per shirt at thrift store. Purchase at least 2 maybe up to 5. Money for miscellaneous items i.e. lace, trims, buttons, thread. I will have embellishments for sale in class too, many vintage items. Class fee includes shuttle service but feel free to give chauffer extra tip if you are so inclined.
