Both a technique class and a project class, we'll be creating a beautiful loose leaf journal of bird (or your own choice) illustrations while learning how to work with fantastic Inktense blocks and pencils. Inktense (made by the British company Derwent) can be used dry like pastels or colored pencils, become soluble in water, but are permanent when dry. They are called "ink blocks" and have vibrant ink-like color. These blocks and pencils are more vibrant than plain watercolor pencils and a lot more versatile. Students can create their own color guide with single colors as well as combinations of colors for reference. We'll play with layers of shaded washes, sprayed, stenciled and even stamped color. With blocks/pencils we'll start using them like pastels/pencils, then move on to simple washes on watercolor paper and then work with gesso too. Rubber stamps and positive and negative stencil techniques will be demonstrated. Learn how to apply two colors in one brushstroke! We'll even combine shaved bits of Inktense to create more painterly images. Work with simple bird silhouettes, draw your own, or work with another design or abstract of your choice. Create a storybook or your own design to practice different techniques during this wonderful Inktense workshop.

Note: Students will learn various techniques while filling a little journal.
