This is a 9 hour workshop.

In Frank L. Baum’s treasured tale, the Wicked Witch of the East put a spell on the Tin Woodman’s axe to prevent him from marrying his sweetheart, and as the enchanted axe chopped off his limbs one by one, he would replace them with tin prosthetics until nothing was left of him but tin. The tinsmith who helped him neglected to replace his heart, so he was no longer able to love his lady. In this workshop, we will explore the dark, tragic beauty of this piece of Baum’s story, and employ several fun and interesting mixed media techniques as we build a glass and metal tribute shrine to this most beloved character. You will learn how to cut, bend, torch, grind, sand, and fasten copper plated “plumber’s tape” into a three-fold picture display stand with transparent images that float behind fancy glass. Then, we’ll build a mixed-media art doll of the Tin Woodman himself using copper pipe, various hardware, doll parts, clay, chain, and found objects. You will also learn about patina, cold connecting, some Dremel skills, durable art construction, tool safety and more! Please make your best effort to bring along as many of the listed tools as possible to avoid down time waiting in line to use mine. I know how hard it is to travel with a lot of heavy tools, so I'll be sure to bring enough to get us all down the yellow brick road.

Nutdrivers or socket wrenches (5/16” & 11/32”)
Propane or MAP torch (Butane torches are too small for this project)
Dremel with grindstone, cut-off wheels, and sanding barrels
Power drill with 3/32” bit
Wood block for drilling on
Ball-Peen Hammer
Metal bench block or small anvil
