The Inlaid Wood Journal
Tuesday August 5th 9 - 4:30 $145 Steve Salik
Student Level: All
Type of Workshop: Project
Prerequisite: None
Accentuate your artwork and writing in a journal featuring covers crafted of exotic hardwood*. In this workshop you’ll use contrasting hardwoods to create a 4” x 6” journal with inlaid covers and a book block sewn onto a leather spine. You’ll begin by learning a simple technique for creating an inlay on the front and back covers of your journal using contrasting hardwoods and polymer clay elements. You’ll create the recesses for the inlay, insert the inlay material into the cover, cut the inlay flush with the cover and then finish your covers by sanding them until smooth and applying wax to protect the wood. A book block will be created by collating individual sheets of paper into signatures and then sewing the signatures onto a leather spine. Attaching the book block to the hardwood covers and crafting a strap closure to keep your journal securely closed will complete the journal.
