Stenciled Journal Journey

    In this workshop participants will create an altered hardbound book that you will create from mixed media canvas and painted papers to create your own unique journal. In the first part of the day you will create painted papers and canvas using a variety of techniques, drawing, painting, stenciling. You will learn several techniques for using and making stencils to create your pages and canvas. In the afternoon you will alter a hardbound book by stripping out the pages, recovering the cover with the canvas and then using the painted paper and high quality drawing paper to re-bind the book. The book can then be used for drawing, painting, collage, writing and mixed media techniques. I will be bringing lots of painting tools, stencils and stamps to play with in class.

Materials fee of $15 payable to Instructor at class time includes:
  • Painters canvas for the cover
  • Pre-cut pages for book
  • Paper, tags, envelops for painting
  • A hard-bound Book for altering
  • Matte medium
  • Water container
  • Paint palette
  • Paper towels or baby wipes.
  • Printed instructions
  • Collage materials
  • Wax

    Students should bring:
  • Scissors and an ex-acto knife
  • Pencil and favorite drawing tools
  • Large paper needle
  • 6 strand colored embroidery floss, 2 to 3 skeins; this is what you will be binding the book with
  • Paint brushes: one small and one large, whatever you have
  • Ruler
  • UHU stick, one large or two small
  • Acrylic paint: Liquitex Basics, Blick Studio or Golden
  • Bone folder

    Optional:
  • Blow dryer
  • Apron
  • Brayer
  • Charms, beads and buttons for the bindingr
