Mixed Media Portraits

Type of Workshop: Project -students will create a mixed media portrait on a stretched canvas and learn several mixed media techniques.
Prerequisite: None

 
 

    In this workshop, participants will create unique stylized portraits through a mixed media layering process on a stretched canvas. (Alternate substrates can be used for portraits if desired) Class will begin with the basics of drawing faces, no drawing experience necessary. We will use a variety drawing techniques and exercises to draw different types of faces and portraits. In addition, you will be given several facial patterns that you can alter and design in your own style. After transferring one of the face designs to your substrate you will use mixed media techniques to create your portrait through a process of layering including, drawing, mark-making, painting, stamping, stenciling, print-making and collage. I will be bringing lots of painting tools for you to use in class.

Materials fee of $10 payable to Instructor at class time includes use of:
  • Matte medium and glue
  • Collage materials
  • Alternate substrates: un-stretched canvas, manila folder and water-color paper
  • Water container, paint palette and paper towels
  • Printed instructions
  • Making faces coloring books

    Students should bring:
  • Black Sharpie
  • Regular no.2 pencil and your favorite drawing materials
  • 3 inexpensive paint brushes, small, medium and large, whatever you have.
  • Scissors
  • Collage bits: random paper and fabric scraps, photos, magazine pictures, whatever you like to play with
  • A stretched canvas: 8 by 10 inches, but any size will work
  • Alternate substrates: wood scrap, old hardback book, etc., I will be bringing a few optional substrates for you to work on as well if you don’t want to bring your own substrate.
  • Acrylic paints: I use Liquitex Basics, Blick Studio or Golden

    Optional:
  • Apron
  • A blow dryer for drying in between layers
  • Photos and pictures of faces you like
