Student Level:

Type of Workshop: Process and Project
Prerequisite: None

Forget all the old rules for screen printing and add a some new ways to use linoleum blocks, stamps, paints and dyes to create luminous color and astonishing visual texture on paper and fabric. Many of your prints will be suitable for framing, and all the rest will guarantee that your collages, paper quilts, hand-made books and multi-media fiber art will be unique. Each sheet you pull will be one-of-a-kind, guaranteed. We'll even be printing on some unusual grounds like brown paper, plaster and collages.

The tools are simple, inexpensive and easy to find. You'll leave the class with a big handout that details every technique, dye recipe, cutting and process hint that I have acquired in the 10 years I've been putting images on paper and fabric. It will even include my plans for building inexpensive and adaptable screens, bench hooks and printing surfaces.

You will leave the class with some very useful skills like how to cut a lino block, how to personalize your own silk screens and how to adapt a design for printing.

Supplies provided by teacher:
  • Many cut blocks that you will be welcome to use
  • A variety of scrapers and squeegees for the class to use so you can decide what you like best before you start buying your own
  • an assortment of blank silk screens for you to use that are big, little, in odd configurations and in unusual shapes because I see no good reason for silk screens to conform
  • Materials to pad the work tables and lots of containers for mixing colors and holding rinse water
  • Newsprint for stencils and some basic drawing supplies for those who like to plan ahead
  • Paper towels
