Taking up ceramics doesn’t need to be as daunting as it seems, nor does it require a bunch of expensive equipment to be able to do it. In this class, you’ll get an introduction to the wonderful world of ceramics while painting ‘art plates’, similar to the ones featured in my ’52 Weeks of Art Plates’ project. We’ll use Cover Coats underglazes, which behave similarly to acrylic paints to design our plates, embellish them with French Dimensions, then seal them with a clear glaze so that they become food safe. The plates will be fired off campus and returned to you the following day.

Materials fee of $15 payable to Instructor at class time includes:
  • Duncan Cover Coat Underglazes
  • Duncan Pure Brilliance clear glaze
  • Duncan French Dimensions dimensional glazes
  • Bisque plate
    and the use of:
  • Paintbrushes
  • Stencils
  • Stamps
  • Miscellaneous mark making and texturizing supplies
Students should bring:
  • Plastic card like a hotel key or old credit card
  • Pencil
  • Container for water
  • Stencils and/or stamps if you have any favorites you’d like to use - bold patterns work best
  • paper towels
