Using Plexiglas as a foundation for encaustic wax offers options that cannot be achieved with a traditional canvas. For beginner to experienced artist, this encaustic how-to workshop provides an excellent overview for combining encaustic wax with the mixed-media collage look you love while achieving a beautiful light filtering luminosity.

Using clear acrylic plexiglas as the foundation through which the finished piece will be viewed, the class will build the collage from both sides of the “canvas”, learning important information on the basics of encaustic wax & collage practices, along with techniques that are friendly to the encaustic medium, including image transfers, incising and mark-making, simple monoprint transfers, and more!

Instruction on adding hanging hardware as part of the process will be given so your project is ready for display!

Materials Fee of $20 payable to Intructor at class time covers unlimited classroom use of:

  • Encaustic Wax Medium
  • Pigmented Encaustic
  • Oil Pastels and Oil pigment sticks
  • Graphite pencils, drawing pastels, ink
  • Sandpaper
  • Image transfer sheets
  • Wire for hanging

Equipment provided by instructor:

  • Skillets to heat wax
  • Aluminum bowls and containers
  • brushes
  • heat guns
  • mini iron
  • extension cords
  • Incising tools
  • stencils

Students should bring:

  • 8 x10 .080mil Acrylic Plexiglas sheet (from the window department at your hardware store or frame dept at a hobby center)
  • ephemera collage papers (include lightweight pieces such as sewing patterns – as well as text weight)
  • stamps, stickers, labels, small embellishments
  • textured papers
  • toner based copies if the student has special images they want to use – otherwise some will be provided
  • special pictures or images student might want to create monoprint (image will not be damaged)
  • Disposable sponge brush applicator
  • small pack of baby wipes
  • old spoon
  • spray bottle of water
  • Wax paper – I prefer the folded type used in delis but a roll will do
  • fine microfiber cloth or soft cloth such as t-shirt or flannel
