We all love those amazing vintage treasures found while hunting through musty antique stores. But sometimes we don’t want to leave our studio or we can’t find the right item. If you find the perfect object it can be out of your budget. Let me teach you how to take readily available inexpensive items and turn that new shine and cheap plastic into “vintage” treasures. This class will focus on techniques for aging and distressing wood, paper, metal, plastic, fabric, and more. Bring your big box craft store rejects and your dollar store treasures and we will sand, pound, paint, and patina them into unique art items. You will leave this low stress, fun class with new techniques and unique components for dozens of art projects.

Materials fee of $5 payable to Instructor at class time includes:

  • use of butane
  • walnut ink
  • Novacan solution
  • rusting solution
  • dyes
  • nitrile gloves
  • various patina solutions

Instructor will provide:

  • small jewelry torches and heat resistant surfaces
  • grinding stones
  • tools to share
  • additional sample materials
  • a comprehensive handout to take home.

Students should bring:

  • Objects to alter: several pieces from each category
  • New wood: Both Michaels and Joanns have isles full of all shapes and sizes of wooden items
  • Shiny metal: scraps of copper, brass charms, keys, wire, the fake rusty metal shapes found at Micheals
  • Fabric: scraps of different textured light colored fabric include a synthetic fabric
  • Paper: scrapbook paper, book pages, paper doilies, better results with light colors
  • Ceramic: a glazed ceramic knick-nac, lots of options at the dollar store
  • Plastic: dominos, small figures, game pieces
  • Mirror: a small piece of mirror, lots of choice at Michaels and Joanns
  • Sm container of medium body gesso
  • Paint brush and water container
  • Sandpaper in assorted grits
  • Disposable dust mask
  • Hammer (preferably a ball peen)

Optional:

  • Thin leather gloves
  • Hat and or sunscreen
  • Heat gun and extension cord
  • Two part Rusting system from Modern options or Sophisticated Finishes available at Michaels
  • Dremel with various bits if you already own one
