Brooches have long been objects of personal adornments and in this class we will add a new spin by creating brooches with a message! We will explore a multitude of mixed media techniques using polymer clay as the base. Included will be the use of rubber stamps, paint, metal leaf, found objects, beads, charms, collage elements and strips of text to alter the surface of the clay and to create wearable art with attitude!

Supplies Instructor will supply:

  • pin backs
  • clay blades
  • wax paper
  • gold leaf
  • paint and supplies
  • rubber stamps
  • embossing powder
  • heat gun
  • mica powder
  • Guilder’s paste
  • collage images
  • text prompts
  • seed beads
  • rags
  • toaster ovens
  • Staz-On inkpads
  • Distress ink pads

Students should bring:

  • 3 packages of either Premo or Sculpey III polymer clay- darker colors. Make sure the clay is somewhat soft by pressing your thumb into it, if it feels rock hard, don’t buy it! Please pre-condition clay prior to class by kneading it until soft and then roll into a ball and store in a baggie.
  • Rolling pin or even large diameter PVC pipe works
  • A small bottle of Weldbond glue (Michaels or Ace Hardware)
  • A few doo-dads to embed like jewelry parts, charms, buttons, milagros, glass rhinestones, metal findings like halos or crowns, wings, frames, etc. (see pics for ideas).

Optional:

  • collage images of your choosing with faces and text or words with a message of personal significance
