The Construction of an Art Book metal & canvas no sew binding Tuesday 9 - 4:30 $145 Leighanna Light July 31
Student Level: All
Type of Workshop: Project
In this workshop, you will learn how to transform remnants of canvas & metal into this sweet little art book.
This project is appropriate for everyone, whether you are just starting out or an accomplished artist, it can be as simple or as complex as you’d like. The actual construction of the book is very simple & requires no sewing or math skills. The book measures approx.. 5x5, but will most likely be larger after adding tabs, pockets & found objects.
In addition to learning how to construct this book, you will learn how to create yummy surfaces with texture & depth, how to integrate your images with paint & design, & how to add tabs, pockets & mini books. You will also learn alternative methods for connecting found objects without using glue.
Use this book to document your travels, or any other relevant event in your life, it will be treasured for years to come.
Kit fee of $20 payable to Instrutor at class time includes: everything that you need to create the book block- canvas & patinas, as well as cheese cloth, images, ephemera, some found objects & use of instructors hand carved stamps & tools, paints, ink & wire.
Students should bring: Although the supplies for this class are relatively inexpensive & easily accessible, there are a few products that you might not be able to find in your area. You may have to order these online, so please order your supplies early to allow for shipping time.
- White gesso, at least 6 oz.- Utrecht Artists' Acrylic Gesso, White, Medium Bodied. This is a thick & inexpensive gesso that is available here...http://www.utrechtart.com/dsp_view_product.cfm?item=9001. You will need this thicker gesso to achieve texture.
- Crafters Pick, the ultimate glue,, small 4 oz. Bottle. This glue is available at Hobby Lobby, or online...http://www.crafterspick.com/
- Two 6x6 pieces of thinner metal for the covers, vintage tin, ceiling tin or thin copper or brass (26-28 gauge)
- A Pencil & a bone folder if you have one
- A few inexpensive thick brushes to apply gesso & glue, approx. 1 inch
- A variety of small & medium found objects. Think metal springs, tabs, bingo pieces, brass stencils, rusty stuff, chain, buttons, sign letters.... The possibilities are endless!

- 1 or 2 bold design texture stamps (script, patterns, or hand carved stamps all work well for this project).
- A variety of eyelets & small brads
- A Cropodile (only if you have one, if you don't know what it is, don't go out & buy it!!)
- 2 or 3 SMALL bottles of acrylic paint. If everyone brings a SMALL amount of 2 or 3 colors & is willing to share, there should be plenty to go around. I also bring paint to share.
- A variety of ephemera, paper & small images that are meaningful to you
A NoTe ABouT SuPpliEs
I bring plenty of images, ephemera & small found objects for everyone to use. However, I believe that it is important to have some materials to work with that you are familiar with & comfortable using. Therefore, I ask that you bring variety of things that you love to work with. Also, we usually end up having a community pile for everyone to use, so if you can, please bring extras to share.
