let the beauty we love be what we do...rumi
This quote seemed to sum up this love of mine. I have been collecting things from nature...rocks, feathers, nests, twigs, shells, etc., for as long as I can remember, and as much as i enjoy collecting these treasures, I, equally love to assemble these natural elements into an art form to be hung in my home. They are a simple reminder of where my gathering travels and treks have taken me…off the grid!
So, if you, too like to collect treasures from nature and want to learn how to create a wonderful natural montage, then this will be a class you will enjoy. These earthly goods are easily available, and the right price! We will begin by laying our foundation with a substrate, and a frame, the size will depend on what frame you want to work with. If you choose a small frame, 4x6, 5x7, even 8x10, though, bring several, (they don’t have to match!) say three…in varying sizes…this will allow you to move freely between them with your collections, creating a collage within a collage. I used a larger, vintage, gesso frame for the one here. It gives a sense of an inspiration board…which is what I was going for, for me. Bring what works for you.
We will then proceed to layer, mix, and create a beautiful nature study. I will guide you with lessons on creating texture, combining color, understanding composition, the power of repetition, and the art of scale…all, so your piece will have a natural flow with a very calming effect. You will learn the process of how to lay your foundation, create depth, frame, and set the stage so to speak, so that each item will have its own unique placement.
Students should bring:
- Frame or frames
- backing/substrate for frame(s)… (masonite, or matte board) cut to fit. Some frames will already have this backing. Check at thrift stores, like Goodwill, they sometimes have old frames with yucky prints that we will cover over, anyway.
- Old papers, vintage photos (even photocopied pictures on transparent paper) ephemera, new/old papers like Basic Grey, pieces of cardboard, mica sheets, tissue type papers, anything transparent with cool textures, vintage wall paper, old photo cardboard frames/mats, botanical prints…all of these are just examples; to help you to be on the lookout for your background and collaging papers.
- Natural elements…shells, small rocks, pinecones, leaves, nests, butterfly wings, snake skins…the list really could go on and on…just bring an assortment of what your drawn to
- Small hammer
- Scissors
- Wire
- Waxed linen
- Wire cutters
- Small upholstery black nails and/or tacks
- Liquid nails
- Acrylic medium
- Paint brushes
- Sandpaper
I will have on hand an assortment of above mentioned, as well. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me…I’d be happy to help!
