Student Level: Advanced skill level and must be 18 years of age
Prerequisite: Basic soldering skills with a torch
Type of Workshop: Process/Fabrication/Silversmithing

 

 

This fabricating class will touch on multiple skills that can be used to enhance any smithing project. Create a contemporary ring while refining your sawing, shaping and soldering techniques. Students will be encouraged to create their own designs. If you are looking to challenge this class will surely impress. Every step will refine your skills and give you experience with that tool (saw) you have been avoiding. Tools may be purchased from instructor. Most students will complete project, some will complete 2.

    Your choice of kit:( fees payable to Instructor at class time)

    Kit #1: $70 includes enough stock for one SS and one copper ring, saw blades, sanding materials. Kit fee is tied to the cost of sterling silver at the time of the workshop. If sterling is higher than $30 per ounce, kit price will be higher. If sterling is lower than $30 per ounce, kit price will be lower.

    Kit #2: $45 includes enough stock for one SS and copper combination ring and one copper ring, saw blades, sanding materials.

    • Bezel shears
    • Flat nose or chain nose
    • Nylon nose pliers
    • Steel ring mandrel
    • Metal files
    • Bench pin
    • Jewelers saw
    • Leather mallet
    • Student files
    • Cut lube, bur life or parafin

      Optional
    • Forming block for ring mandrel
    • Fire Tweezers
    • Chasing Hamme
    • Texture Hammers
    • Magnifying glasses and Ott light as needed
    Provided by the instructor:
    • 4 torches, quenching bowls, fire tweezers, fire bricks, pickle and pickle pot
    • Flexshaft and required bits
    • Solder
