Creating and making tiny wearable reliquary metal boxes has become such a way of life for me in my jewelry-making journey. I love containing objects and giving them new meaning. Spiritual meaning. It is a way of celebrating the object within. The first tiny box I made gave refuge to a little tooth I had been holding onto for some time. It was my way of honoring a rather odd and curious memory and bringing a certain sense of devotion to the tooth. It also gave me such satisfaction as an artist to create a true tiny wearable sculpture. Not only was it enjoyable to create and to wear, I found it touched others and created unexpected conversations wherever I would go.
In this workshop, I will teach you my secrets of making such a poignant little vessel for a cherished object of your choosing. Learn how to measure, cut and build a perfect small box. Hand-finish it to using a variety of techniques and tools. Seal it with a formed plexi-glass window and finish it off with creating a very powerful chain filled with charms and bezels.Supplies Provided by Instructor : metal for hand making your metal boxes, butane for torches, assortment of jeweler’s tools like hammers, files, drills, extra sanding blocks, tripods, wire, pipe bezels, silver solder, plexi glass, chemicals for darkening the surface of brass. Jewelry findings and wire. A handout of sources and supplies along with tips and techniques will be provided.
Supply List:
- A meaningful tiny object for your reliquary box. Please keep this object under 2 ½ inches in dimension. It needs to be curious and small and easy to wear.
- Ball peen hammer
- Butane Torch – Harbor Freight sells one- ITEM 41169-7VGA under $10!
- Tin Snips (metal shears)
- Jewelers pliers
- Small anvil and/or jewelers block
- Small block of wood to punch metal on (Avoids holes in tables)
- 12 inch ruler
- Junk chains and broken jewelry parts to reuse
- Variety of beads or stones to adorn your piece
- Jewelers saw frame and 2/0 (double zero) blades
Optional items:
- Butane (I will supply some-but if you want your own feel free to get a small can)
- Soldering block or Fire Brick found at more jewelry supply places on line.
- Small bench vise if you need an extra hand
- Eyelet setter and eyelets (scrapbook companies carry a nice variety)
- Metal punch, alphabet stamps for metal
- Bench pin to help in cutting
- Dremel with a variety of bits for sanding and drilling
