This is a 1 1/2 day workshop (9 hours).
Thoughts coil and catch, like yarn in a cat’s paw. Images flash through the mind and beg to be captured on paper, with paint, in art or with the line of thread. The practice of journaling, whether with word or imagery, catches the fragments of thought that swirl around in a dustdevil life and lay them down as evidence of a day lived – with hope, with optimism, with willingness.
In this project-focused workshop, students will create a journal space with time-worn book covers of plaster and imagery that will house a stack of fabric pages. No ordinary fabric pages – fibery and predictable – these will be prepared to receive ink, paint, drawing, water color, etc. Through the use of various mediums, we will transform the fabric pages to behave more like paper than fabric but with every bit of pattern, fiber, and texture and selvege still evident. Various ways to combine paper and fabric pages for writing, painting and collage surfaces as well as knotting and binding techniques will also be taught. Each student can expect to take home a completed or very nearly complete blank journal home with them at the end of class day.
Materials fee of $5 payable to Instructor at class time includes: Small spool of waxed linen/book binder’s thread
Supply List:
- Basic art kit: craft knife, scissors, ruler, etc.
- Two old book covers (front and back), illustration board or canvas boards any size ranging from 4x6 to 8x10. These will serve as the substrate to your cover so make sure you have a matching pair.
- Various fabrics to total about 2 yards. Choose fabrics you like together. If you want elements sewn onto the pages, pre-tear your fabric to the height X twice the width of your book covers (because it will be folded in half lengthwise to create a single page). Sew only on the top of the fabric staying away from the center where the fold will be. This is optional and can be done later, if you want to preserve the texture of lace or other open weave additions.
- Water container
- Scissors
- Large needle
- 2 inch chip/hog bristle brush
- brayer
- 3 inch flat plastic trowel or junk credit card or hotel room key (it will wash off fine)
- Various laser or toner images no larger than your book covers OR images printed on tissue paper
- Soft gel medium (8 ounce tub is fine)
- Acrylic paints in your favorite colors. Just a few. Include raw umber and titanium white.
- Heat gun or hair dryer – sharing with a neighbor is great!
Optional Supplies:
Bits and pieces of fabric, trims, lace, etc. This is a GREAT time to use delicate vintage fabrics!
