    In this class, you will learn how to paint watercolor images from nature that will be used as collage elements to create a dimensional watercolor painting. You will learn how to paint and cut out your images, detail them with pen and ink, create a composition with your elements, and even how to add unexpected things to your painting creating a multi-dimensional watercolor painting. Even if you think you cannot draw, there will be an option for you! You will have a choice to draw your own images or bring in “to scale” images and transfer the main image lines to paint. We will also explore possibilities of using items such as text, decorative or handmade paper, dried pressed flowers, skeleton leaves, and more to incorporate into your paintings. This class will open your eyes to a whole new dimension of watercolor painting! Our finished pieces will be 8x10 in size.

    Supplies provided by Instructor include: watercolor paints, glue, images for inspiration, text pages, paper towels, skeleton leaves, Saral transfer paper, cheesecloth , salt, cups for water, alcohol, and blow dryers for use in class

    Supply List:
  • 1-8x10 piece of 140 lb. cold-press watercolor paper plus some scraps or another 8x10 piece. I highly recommend Fabriano.
  • paint palette, preferably with a lid or bring a ziplock bag in case you don’t completely finish your painting in class, you can travel home with a palette of the colors you used in class. If you choose to bring your own palette of paint, this will not be an issue.
  • pencil
  • kneaded eraser
  • exacto knife (have a fresh blade in it)
  • sharp pointed scissors
  • watercolor brushes sizes: #2 round, #6 round, #12 round (These are the main brushes used. If you have other that you enjoy, bring them. Don't get hung up on exact brush size. You just need something small for detail work, a medium, and a larger size. A dagger is a great brush to use if you have one.)
  • Black Micron pens sizes: .05 is my favorite and my standard size to use. A .02 or .01 are smaller but will work as well. A .08 is larger and will also work. (If you have a variety of sizes, bring them!)
  • Images from nature. I find children's picture books to be fabulous as well as bird or gardening magazines. Of course, taking your own photos is wonderful as well. Your images will need to be to scaled for the size we are working with if you will be opting to trace your main elements instead of drawing everything from scratch. If you have questions about this, please don't hesitate to contact Angie (princessburninghair@cox.net), especially if you aren't confident drawing. Don’t let your lack of drawing skills or confidence discourage you from taking this class!

your own pan of watercolor paints
pressed, dried flowers or foliage
a few paper scraps you love, especially handmade or thin papers, skeleton leaves
hair dryer or heat gun (I will have a few but some may wish to have their own. We can all share.)
