In this process/project oriented class, you will become part of a mixed-media production team, who, through my artful guidance will render an on-the-spot luscious zine/chapbook/artist book. Call it what you will—there is no "proper" term for the piece of inspirational eye candy that we will be creating, both together as a team and individually. Not only will I be directing the production, I'll be working right along with you as an integral member of the team. I will give you assignments and exercises in class based on my non-traditional style of working. These exercises and methods that I have honed over the years as an artist, will light your fires of creativity and inspiration to get both your mind and hands moving. This will enhance all areas of your artistic work, whether it is visual or written.
After the work is completed, I'll teach you to bind your pages into a Japanese Stab-Bound book. Each team member will be leaving this energy-charged class with a finished one-of-a-kind book that they have individually created from the foundation and workings of the production team. While each person's book will be different, as your team leader and curator, I will be putting together a professionally printed, full-color booklet filled with the best piece by each team member, including some of my work. Purchase of this second book is optional and will be available for a fee of $25 to cover the printing & mailing cost. After I return home from class to add the finishing touches, I will have it professionally printed and will mail it to you when it is completed.
This is a wonderfully fun and stimulating class for all levels—no experience necessary.
Instructor will provide the colorful binding materials and the hinge materials, baby wipes, and wax paper.
Supply List:
-Copies of some of your artwork: black & white, and/or color; made from inkjet printers and/or toner printer/copy machines. Can be copies of your journal pages, paintings, drawings, photographs, writing, etc. Any size is good. Bring several copies of about 4 pieces.
-Chipboard (cereal boxes, frozen pizza boxes, etc.) Cut the box apart into 2 pieces a little bigger than the size of book you want to make.
-Glue stick
-Scissors
-Brayer
-Scissors
-Exacto knife and sharp blades
-cutting mat (8.5" x 11" or a little bigger)
-Small jar of gel medium
-Brayer
-Collage material: photos, papers, etc.
-Paints: acrylic and/or watercolor—several colors that you want to use (cheap craft paints and/or watercolors are fine)
-Various coloring materials and writing tools: water soluble oil pastels, watercolor crayons, markers, etc.
-Brush marker
-Pen & drawing pencil
-Water cup for painting
-Paint brushes and a few cheap 1" paint brushes
-stamp pads (I prefer staz-on!)
-your favorite alphabet stamps
-a small grab bag of ephemera & collage stuff to share
Optional:
Hair dryer or heat gun to speed up the drying process
Embellishments: brads, staplers & staples, etc., sewing thread & needle if you want to sew on your work.
