In this process workshop, students will learn the basics of working with plaster and plaster-like products for the purpose of creating deep texture in their 2-dimensional artwork. The focus will be in depth exploration of texturing techniques with trowels, sculpting and casting techniques, painting, tinting, sanding, carving, rolling, etching and writing into plaster. Students will also learn and experiment with various plaster recipes for use in different forms of artwork such as wood, canvas, altered books, jewelry and more. A take-home booklet of hints, tips and general information for working with plaster at home will help with students’ future plaster work.
Supplies provided by the Instructor include: Plaster and plaster-like products , Pigments , Glues , Sand Papers , Use of sculpting tools used for clay sculpting , Masking tape , Dust masks , Latex gloves
Supply List:
3-5 Canvas boards (not stretched canvases) 5x7 or larger
1.75 pound package of Sculpey Clay (white is fine), oven dry (do not bake ahead of time)
Apron
Awl
Craft knife and/or scissors
Acrylic Paints in your choice of colors
1-2 Chip brushes (1-2 inch) (the cheap wooden brushes from a hardware store)
Artist Brushes for detail work
3-dimensional hard objects for casting such as buttons, shells, decorative hardware, etc.
Paper Ephemera such as images and old book pages (just a few pieces)
Pencil
Artist pallet knives if you have them already
