Have you ever wanted to dash off a quick watercolor painting of something that caught your eye? This workshop will show you lots of no pain, easy to learn methods of drawing and watercolor painting. You will be able to choose the size of your painting and find what format works best for your comfort level and personal style. You may want to capture your images on the pages of a small sketchbook or journal, make postcards or 9 x 12 paintings, it's up to you! Also in class we will create a take along lap travel art studio using a box that we will customize to suit your supplies. We will take imaginary journeys in class to Monet's Garden, the Ponte Vecchio Bridge in Florence , the Chateau region of France , a vineyard, and many other picturesque locales. Your instructor will guide you step by step thru the drawing and painting of your subject matter and explain to you about drawing simplified with a grid and much more. Once you are comfortable you'll do your own paintings in class and the instructor will be there to provide any help you might need. Drawings of images from the locations will be supplied in the hand-out if you don't want to draw at all. We'll also explore watercolor pencil techniques for quick anywhere paintings.
Supplies provided by the Instructor include: a picture plane, a perspective measuring device, a plastic envelope that will be made into a 4”x6” grid, a piece of graphite tracing paper and an ink pen that is excellent for making ink wash paintings and sketches, plus a hand-out describing the techniques discussed in class.
Supply List:
-A wooden box that opens, has a handle for carrying and is at least 3” deep, and suggested lap size at least 14 ½” x 9 ¾”. These can be purchased on the Internet or at an art supply store.
-¼” x 1” x 36” of balsa wood, can be smaller in length, will be cut up to make compartments in our boxes.
-Wood glue
-Arches cold press watercolor paper 140lb in 9x12 or so, can be bought in pads or large sheets and cut OR journal OR sketchbook OR postcards, whatever you prefer to paint on.
-Sketch pad, 80 lb or heavier paper, Super Aquabee or Raffine are good brands
-Some artist or drafting masking tape
-a smalll container to hold water for dipping your brushes
-small watercolor palette with a lid that will fit into your travel studio, can be a Cotman travel paint box
-Watercolor in small tubes, either Cotman or Artist grade in Permanent Rose, Lemon Yellow, Sap Green, ---Ultramarine Blue, Thalo blue, dioxine violet, yellow ochre and burnt sienna.
-# 6 round brush, Robert Simmons Sapphire is a good brand
-¼” flat brush, Winsor Newton Scepter Gold is a good brand
-small pack of travel Kleenex
-micron or Nexus or thin tipped waterproof pen
6-12 watercolor pencils, Kimberly is a good inexpensive brand
-2 B pencil
-white eraser or kneaded eraser
-kitchen sponge
-foam core board or piece of cardboard to support your watercolor paper
